October means Opals

October Greetings,

Not every one agrees on which birthstone is associated with each month. In fact, we've had some different opinions here at Bella Designs. I'm sticking with opals as the traditional birthstone for the month (if you prefer a faceted stone then pink tourmaline is the October birthstone for you).

Opals have an interesting history. In the Middle Ages, opals were considered the provider of great luck. An opal was believed to possess all the virtues of each gemstone whose color was represented in the color spectrum of the opal. It was also believed it could make you invisible if you wrapped it in a bay leaf and held it in your hand. Hmm...

Most of the world's opals come from Australia - opal is the country's national gemstone. Opals range from clear through white, gray, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, magenta, rose, pink, slate, olive, brown, and black. Of these hues, the reds against black are the most rare. Opals may occur in the fissures of almost any kind of rock, being most commonly found with limonite, sandstone, rhyolite, marl, and basalt.

There are different types of opals; natural, treated, or synthetic. Some are solid and others are assembled. Boulder opals are a natural combination of precious opal and an ironstone back.

The veins of opal displaying the play of color are often quite thin, so sometimes the natural opal is backed by ironstone, basalt, , or obsidian. Called an opal doublet, the darker backing emphasizes the play of color, and results in a more attractive display than it would have without the backing.

Another type of assembled stone is a triplet. Triplets have the layer of opal sandwiched between a backing and a top layer of clear quartz, ceramic, or plastic.

If you want to know more about opals take a look at the book Opal Identification and Value by Paul B. Downing http://www.amazon.com/Identification-Value-Rocks-Minerals-Gemstones/dp/0962531189/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1255118308&sr=1-1 or the websites http://www.geology.com/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opal

We have a colorful selection of opals at Bella Design for you to see. Drop by and let us show you these beautiful pieces.

"Little Black Dress" event at Ursuline College

Hi - this is a quick note from Lisa, Director of Marketing at Bella,

Rock wanted me to share some details about an upcoming event we will be participating in...

Fashionistas - mark October 10th on your calendars. One of our local colleges is exhibiting a selection of their vast collection of dresses. The curator, Dr. Constance Korosec, has chosen the 'little black dress' for her focus - the classic garment Coco Chanel once described as "a sort of uniform for all women of taste." It certainly is a great backdrop for your jewelry. Among the designers featured - Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Anne Fogarty, and Bill Blass.
Kara and I will be showcasing Bella's offerings at the event from 1:30 to 4:30PM - along with some other interesting vendors.
For more info on the exhibit, fashion show, silent auction, and tea and chocolate event you can call Ursuline College at 440-646-8375. Oh, and go ahead and wear your 'little black dress.'

Hope to see you there,
Lisa

Go Local event at the market Square shops

Hello,

Recently, my fellow merchants in the Market Sqaure plazas (where Bella Design is located) formed a merchants association. We are kicking off our first group event on October 1st. It should be fun for our customers and really help to highlight the great businesses right here in Bainbridge. We are handing out stamp cards for people to take around to each of the Market Square businesses (no purchase required). If you get your card stamped by every business then you have a chance to win the grand prize worth $2500.00! The prize includes cool stuff from some of the businesses and gift cards from others. I'm thinking it could come in handy for all those holiday gifts needed soon. Bella Design is donating a Cherie Dori bracelet with multi-colored glass beads. If you can't quite get to all 20 then you can try for second prize - still pretty great at a $500.00 value. Come on in and pick up your card. You have until October 31st to get it filled up.

Hi,

Just wanted to let you know about the new pieces at Bella.

We have introduced a new sterling silver line featuring beautiful stones in Autumn's colors - to complement the upcoming fashions you'll be wearing. The pendants pair polished semi-precious stones with more natural stones such as Druzy Quartz. They truly showcase the beauty of nature. Kara and Michele are showing the pendants on a selection of ribbons and chokers that enhance the beautiful colors even more.

Also, we are excited about a new yellow gold collection (note: yellow gold is back in) that will be arriving late the fall. The beautifully designed jewelry exhibits a rich yellow, textured finish that draws you in. Come and take a look.

We've expanded our selections from the Frank Reubel line. New engagement settings and fashion pieces will be arriving shortly. Included are some stunning sculptural pieces in rose gold and a new line of colored stone jewelry set in silver.

And of course, I continue to design custom pieces for clients and am working on adding more Rock White designs to the showcases. Some new jewelry in the works incorporate earthy elements like rough slate and faceted diamond accents handcrafted in gold and silver settings.

Drop in, we'd love to see you.

CattleBarron's Ball Update

Hi,

At the end of August my wife, Katie and I attended the CattleBarron's Ball hosted by the Cleveland American Cancer Society. I want to thank the co-director of the event, Linda Campbell, for inviting me to be a play a prominent part in raising money to help beat cancer. It's great to learn that the pendant "Strength" which I designed for the event, raised more than 5000 dollars. Congratulations to the winner, Kara Hamulak of Brooklyn, Ohio. I hope she enjoys wearing the piece for many years to come.

As planned, I will be creating additional "Strength" pendants in white and rose golds set with pink sapphires. If you would like to get on the waiting list for a pendant, please feel free to give Bella Designs a call (440-543-5006).

Regards,

August 17, 2009

I designed this pendant for the American Cancer Society's Cattle Barons' Ball. The diamonds are naturally pink; unfortunately, the diamonds are a lighter color then I had wanted, but I think it turned out really well. I am proud to have been asked to participate in this event and hope my contribution will be extremely helpful in raising money. Raffle tickets are available at Bella Design Jewelers, and donations to the American Cancer Society can be made online, using the below link.

July 20, 2009
The latest at Bella - we are excited to be part of an upcoming event benefiting the American Cancer Society. On August 29th they are hosting the Cleveland Cattle Barons' Ball. You can visit http://www.cbbcleveland.org/ to get the details. I've designed and I'm in the process of creating a cool pendant titled "strength" that will be raffled the night of the ball.

I've had some great suggestions regarding the creation of the pendant. First my wife suggested that I create a piece that represented the strength shown by people who battle cancer. I decided to craft it from stainless steel - an amazingly strong yet very beautiful metal- along with rose gold which would represent the pink ribbon used to symbolize the fight against breast cancer. When one of our customers who has won her own battle against cancer came in to the store with a couple of old rose gold rings, Kara our manager suggested that the rose gold section of the pendant be made from her old rings. The stainless steel section of the pendant will be set with one carat of pink diamonds and the stainless steel piece will be suspended from a rose gold section. The whole piece will float on a 14k white gold, multi-strand chain with diamond accents. It should be beautiful, and more importantly raise money for cancer research.

You can support the cause by purchasing raffle tickets - we have them in the store - or you can find them through the Cancer Society website.

I'll post an image of the pendant soon, so keep an eye out for it.

Regards,
Rock
